Benchmark Assisted Living has appointed Stephanie Handelson as chief operating officer.
Handelson, a Marco Island resident, will hold primary responsibility for all daily operations at the 44 senior living communities Benchmark operates in six states.
Prior to joining Benchmark Assisted Living, Handelson served as senior vice president of East Coast Operations for Sunrise Assisted Living, overseeing operations and financial management for more than 200 senior living communities in the eastern U.S.
In addition to 10 years as an executive with Sunrise, Handelson’s career has included hospitality and sales management-related experience.
She received a master of business administration from Dowling College and a bachelor of professional studies in hospitality management, summa cum laude, from the New York Institute of Technology.
Solid showing
More than 100 people joined builders Slocum & Christian Inc. at a recent party to celebrate 24 years in business.
The Marco company has since 1985 built custom homes on Marco Island, and under principals John Slocum and Tom Christian pledge hands-on management as well as attention to detail.
They also attribute their success to long-serving sub-contractors, suppliers and employees.
The cocktail party took place at the home of John and Judith Slocum.

Either way, lovers of Joe can now try a new selection from Joffrey’s Coffee & Tea Company during shopping stints at Publix.
At $9.99 a bag, the flavors are Roastmaster’s Reserve, billed as “a dark roasted blend of Indonesian and African coffee beans with a velvety, smoky nuances and a hint of caramel in the finish;” Breakfast Blend, “a medium-bodied coffee with a rich aroma made of a special blend of Central and South American coffee beans,” and Jamaican Me Crazy, “a rich, flavored coffee with hints of caramel, vanilla and KahluaTM liqueur.”
Then there’s Angel’s Kiss, “a medium-bodied flavored coffee with delicious notes of chocolate, coconut and a halo of nuts;” Sinful Delight, “a carefree indulgence offering drinkers chocolate and butterscotch flavors with nutty overtones;” and Hazelnut Cream, “a creamy flavored coffee with a warm, cozy hazelnut taste.”
Joffrey’s Coffee & Tea Company is based in Tampa, and does local, national, international and online distribution. It was founded in 1984.
Luxury look-see
Top international real estate executive Rick Moeser of Christie’s Great Estates was recently in town as the guest of Realtors Natalie Kirstein and ML Meade.
Moeser, who is Christies’ vice president, oversees the company’s affiliate relationships for brokerage companies in the Southeast, Caribbean, and Latin America.
On his tour, Moeser had a personal look at the condo of Ron and Jenny Oister in the Belize tower at Cape Marco.
Kirstein said Moeser remarked that comparable penthouse condominiums on the east coast of Florida would cost twice the price.
Moeser also had a look at some of the Madeira luxury suites.
Overall, Kirstein said, Moeser had rave reviews for Marco Island’s beaches and condominiums.
