Today’s another great adventure for The Banner. We added a new health section for this edition. It will run each Saturday and feature stories on local physicians, health care board members, civic leaders, fitness experts and notes on upcoming seminars and where residents can go to get medical care.
We’re riding on the coattails of people like Don Eslick: an Estero resident who works tirelessly in a variety of roles. Eslick and a group of health care experts have already built a Web site (http://esterofl.org/EsteroLife/healthcare/updates.htm) devoted to health care issues. The Banner is going to pick up features from that site and allow experts in the field to post stories and columns directly to mybannerhub.com.
The goals is to build a clearinghouse of all things related to the medical field.
We want our site to be a comprehensive listing of area hospitals, doctors, urgent care centers, specialists, dentists, physical rehabilitation centers and relevant meetings and issues. It will include as much of Lee and Collier counties as possible.
The print version this week (on pages 57 and 58) features local residents who participated in National Start! Walking Day, an effort to educate the public about the need for exercise. You will also find a feature on a North Naples health club, as well as a story about local civic and government leaders who are pushing for better medical facilities in south Lee.
Next Saturday we will start running a column from Dr. Allen Weiss, president and CEO of NCH Healthcare System.
The Banner staff will continue to grow the section, adding columns and calendar listings as well as an “ask the experts” section where readers can send in questions. We’ll find answers to those questions and post them online and run them in our print editions.
So today is another crossroads at The Banner. We’re in a constant mode of change, but our top goal is to always serve our readers the best that we can.
And our staff feels like a massive health care directory online and in print is a way to do just that.
