MARCO ISLAND — A sailboat overturned near Residents Beach at about 1 p.m. Thursday, just minutes after several rescue crews left the scene of a car which ran off the road and into the side of a house on Kendall Drive, Marco Island.
Details on the driver involved in the one-vehicle accident were not immediately available, however Marco Fire Rescue Division Commander Donny Jones said the driver was stabilized on the scene for trauma and taken to Physicians Regional Hospital in Naples.
Construction crews who witnessed part of the accident said the driver was heading toward Collier Boulevard on Kendall Drive when it drove off the road and into the side of a home on the corner of Kendall Drive and Colonial Drive.
Marco Island Police Corporal George Williams said it appeared to have been caused by the driver having a medical emergency. There was not significant damage to the home or vehicle, only to nearby landscaping.
After the car hit the home, it back out of the driveway coming to a halt across the street into the front lawn of another home.
A Hobe Cat, which is a small, one-person sailboat flipped over in the waters near Residents Beach. Marco Island Fire Rescue and Marco Island Police arrived on the scene and Jones reported that the mast of the sailboat had snapped. Officers on a Jetski were towing the sailboat to shore, without any major injuries reported by its operator, Jones added.
