Prep tennis: Lely boys, girls lose to Bishop Verot in Class 2A region semifinals

The Lely girls faced a tough match Tuesday afternoon against Bishop Verot, losing 7-0 to the Viking in the Class 2A region semifinals at Ace Tennis Center in Fort Myers.

Lely received solid performances from Jenny Stout and Taylor Crouse in their respective singles matches.

Bishop Verot was able to sweep the singles matches and won the doubles matches through Lely defaults.

“Bishop Verot has the same team structure as Naples,” Lely coach Kevin Smith said. “They are young, tall, deep, and aggressive.”

The Trojans boys also struggled against Bishop Verot, falling 6-1 at Fort Myers Racquet Club.

Winning the only match for the Trojans was Matt Browne in No. 1 singles. The Trojans finish the season 7-8.

Despite the loss Tuesday, coach Dan Johnson remains optimistic about next year.

“We were a young team that made great strides this year,” he said.

The Verot boys and girls teams each play at home against Naples in Thursday’s region final.
