Eye on the Y: Snowbirds flocking back to the Marco Y

The month of December is always an exciting time here at the Y. Snowbirds are back and enjoying their workouts in the fitness center and enjoying the warmth of the sun as they swim in the outdoor pool. Water temp is set at 84 degrees and it’s a joy to do laps during the day.

If you are one of those folks who like making holiday gifts, then Jewelry in a Flash is the course for you. The next class begins at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 8. This class features new projects each week and includes making holiday earrings. You create your own project. Blissful Creations owner Barbara Bliss is the class instructor. Cost is only $25 a session for members and $30 for others. Additional classes are scheduled each Tuesday, through Dec. 22. Sign up today at the customer service desk.

Dec. 12 will be a busy day for Y members and the Marco Island community. Three great events are planned. The 14th annual Greater Marco Family YMCA Golf Tournament gets underway at 8 a.m. You can register to play for only $110, and hole sponsors are still needed at $100 a hole. Great prizes will be awarded, so sign up at the Y today.

The Y Tennis Facility will host a Mixed Doubles Holiday Tennis Tournament from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The entry fee is $15 per person and lunch will be served from 12:30-2 p.m. This tournament is for levels 5.0 and above.

Saturday night is the Marco Island Street Parade. The parade gets underway as dusk falls. The Y has an entry in the parade and I am sure everyone will like our theme float.

The next Parents Night Out is set from from 6:30 to 10 p.m., Dec. 18, This program is open to children ages 2-10. Age-appropriate activities are scheduled. The cost is $25 for first child and $10 each additional child. We provide dinner and a snack.

If you are new to computers and want to learn how to download pictures and do things with them, then make plans to sign up for the class on Downloading Photos, scheduled from 10-11 a.m., Dec. 15 and 10-11:30 a.m., Dec. 17, at the Y. Cost is $35 for members and $50 for others.

Santa’s Calling for Believers is slated for Sunday night, Dec. 20. Have your child receive a call from Santa, one of his elves, or even Mrs. Claus! Applications are available at the customer service desk and must be completed and turned in by Dec. 19.

Holiday Camp is back again at the Y. Week one is scheduled for Dec. 21-25 and week two is slated for Dec. 28-Jan. 1. Field trips, sport clinics, seasonal crafts and theme days are on tap. Cost for Y members is only $75 and $85 for others. Drop-ins are welcome at $20 for members and $25 for others.
