Literacy Council’s legacy pays off with new facility

Oscar Hernandez gave a thank you speech in front of everyone at the Literacy Council of Bonita Springs’ grand opening celebration for its new, larger headquarters building Wednesday night.

Hernandez, who moved from Mexico to the U.S. three years ago, started learning English at the Literacy Council less than two years ago, and that was his first time speaking English in front of a crowd.

“I am a student from this beautiful school, and I just came here to thank you,” said Hernandez, who took English classes four days a week after work. “Thanks to you, now I am speaking English to you.”

Hernandez loves to read, but when he came to the U.S., he had to leave all his Spanish books behind in Mexico. He quickly realized that Spanish books are harder to find in an English-speaking country, so he decided to learn how to speak, read and write in English.

“I have told all the people that I have met that I love reading,” Hernandez said. “I practice reading every morning when I am waiting for the man who picks me up for work.”
