The Lely cross country teams celebrated the future as much as the past when they held their awards dinner at Kretch’s Restaurant on Marco Island on Sunday.
Emily Hine and Devon Imm received two awards each, as did freshman Susana Martinez and senior Roheeda Ullah. For the boys, Ulises Vivar and Amnes Castaneda were double winners.
Hine was Most Valuable for the girls and also won the Focus Award. Ullah won for Most Improved and the Coaches Award. Imm received the Determination Award and the Junior Award. Martinez received the Will to Win Award and the Freshman Award.
For the boys, Vivar was Most Valuable and earned the Coaches Award. Castaneda was Most Improved and earned the Junior Award.
For the girls, Angela Arfuso won Most Improved, Summer Ullah, Guts Award, Maris Moreno, Scholar Award and Paloma Mendez, Sophomore Award.
For the boys, Moises Herrera won the Determination Award, Albert Clark, Guts Award, Angelo Young, Will to Win, Brandon Black, Focus Award, Andrew Lem, Scholar Award, Wyatt Macalister, Freshman Award, Zane Wilson, Sophomore Award and Christian Tateo, Senior Award.
Coach Mark McGarity deemed the season a “year of getting better.” Both teams made the regional finals.
Chris Black, the girls coach, said, “The girls had a great season. They stepped up at the end and gave a fantastic team effort.”
McGarity said, “The boys ran good at the beginning, but lost focus as a team at the end. However, they also showed their potential for next year.”
He expects Vivar will be a team leader and Wilson could reach his potential. Also returning will be freshman Angelo Young and Wyatt Macalister.
“Both had good seasons and will improve,” McGarity said.
“Freshman Susana Martinez had a good season and Angela Arfuso, a runner in track, had a great season,” McGarity said.
Imm, bothered by injuries this year, comes back, along with Alex Barrett and Paloma Mendez.
“There are also good runners coming out of Marco Island Charter and Manatee middle schools,” McGarity said. “I think there is a lot of promise for next year and beyond.”
