About the 2009 contest

An all-time record of participation was set with 1,719 properties judged on the Island. The final judging took place between 6:30 p.m. and 10 p.m., Saturday.

Finalist plaques were presented to the 10 home contest finalists by the judges who traveled via the Marco Island Trolley to the qualifying properties.

The winner of the business contest, Sanitasole, received a plaque and a yard sign for display. The condo contest winner in the Tradewinds received a plaque.

The House Decorating winner with the lights synchronized to music on Barfield Drive received a winners’ plaque, yard sign and $500.

Lee County Electric Cooperative, the event’s premier sponsor since the contest’s inception and provider of electricity on Island, presented the awards. Additional sponsors of the event are Centennial Bank and the Marco Island Trolley, which was decorated and lighted for the finals by the Marco Island Florist.

The contest, chaired by Dave Rice since 1997, has been a tremendous success.

“Light Up Marco 2009” was a record breaker with 1532 homes, 120 businesses and 67 Condo’s for a total of 1,719 properties decorated for the Christmas Season.

The traditional car caravan followed the trolley to see the top 10 homes, the two finalists for the condo contest and three finalists for the business contest.

Christmas revelers are also encouraged to view the list of honorable mention properties as they are also very entertaining.

The rules state that winners cannot repeat as winners for five years to ensure the opportunity for others to be successful. However, many prior winners still decorate and set very high standards for everyone. Visiting the homes during the holiday season is great entertainment for the entire family.

Thanks to all who decorated in making Marco Island a Christmas destination for residents and guests. The committee wishes everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah and a prosperous New Year.
