The Marco Men’s Senior Softball League opened its season, again with two divisions.
Each Friday the results story will be placed in the Eagle. Bertram Orthopedics and Sand Bar are tied for first place in the Island Division at 2-1 and ADKOS and Capt. Brien’s in first place in the Marco Division at 2-1.
Here are the results of the first week, with games reported in order of being played in each division.
The Island Division
Nacho Mama’s, 14, Sand Bar, 4
Nacho Mama’s powered its way past Sand Bar on triples by John Barrett and Rich Krumholtz. Tom Angelo had four hits, including a double. Tom McCullough and Jimmy Cuevas had three hits apiece while Ron Hobson, Jack O’Brien, Fran Diotte and Ray Neimeyer each had two hits in support of winning pitcher Bill Griffin.
Bertram Orthopedics, 12, Cedar Bay, 9
Jumping out to an early 5-0 lead, Bertram’s held off Cedar Bay by turning four double plays. Ron Engels, who shared in the pitching duties, also provided most of the offensive punch for Bertram’s with three hits, including two triples and knocking in three runs.
Rich Schiller had a key two-run triple and Larry Anspach and Dave Banghart had two hits each. Cedar Bay’s Mike Hopkins had three hits, including a double, while Kenny Planck, Bill Shurina, Dick Knothe and Jerry Cnudde had two hits each and John Remhoff had a two-run double for Cedar Bay.
Sand Bar, 14, Cedar Bay, 8
A 22-hit attack led to Sand Bar’s first win. Dan Cody and Mike Behr each had four hits. Pete Oellrich, Joe Cervelli, Tom Pugh, Ron Shudes and winning pitcher Dan Callahan each had two hits. Cedar Bay was led by Murph Knapke and Bill Shurina with three hits each.
Cedar Bay’s Jerry Cnudde, Dick Knothe and Mike Galatis had two hits, with Knothe slamming two doubles and Galatis a double and triple.
Bertram Orthopedics, 15, Nacho Mama’s, 9
Bertram’s pounded Nacho’s pitching in earning its second win. John Cavanagh had a home run, while Ron Engels continued his torrid hitting with three hits, including two triples. Dave Banghart and Bill Kaschube had three hits and teammates Bob Levasseur and Fran Diotte contributed triples. Nacho Mama’s offense was headed by Bill Griffin and John Barrett with three hits each. Rich Krumholz, Tom McCullough and Ray Neimeyer each had two hits.
Sand Bar, 12, Bertram Orthopedics, 6
Sand Bar broke open a 1-1 ball game in fourth inning by scoring four runs only to see Bertram’s’ cut their lead to 5-4, scoring three runs in the fifth.
Sand Bar scored three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to put the game out of reach. Sand Bar’s Dan Cody, Mike Behr, Denny Lello, Pete Oellich, and Bob Tessarolo had two hits each. Bertram’s Rich Schiller had four hits, while Herman Griffith, Bob Levassuer and Ron Engel had three hits each. John Cavanagh had two hits, including a double.
Cedar Bay, 18, Nacho Mama’s, 10
Cedar Bay won its first game behind the power hitting of Craig Cunningham who had three hits, including a three-run homer, double and single. Bill Shurina had three hits and teammates Mike Hopkins, Dick Knothe, and Paul Shelton two hits each. Dom Fiorda had three hits, while John Barrett, Bill Griffin and Jim Green had two hits each for Nacho Mama’s. Jim George was the winning pitcher.
Capt. Brien’s, 10, Crazy Flamingo, 9
Capt. Brien’s rallied from a four-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the win. George Bennett had a three-run double to tie the game and Lee Dilk drove in the winning run. Bennett had two doubles and four RBIs, while Bill Moors, Dan Sullivan and Dilk each had two hits. Flamingo’s runs came from Ralph Leiterding who had three hits, including a triple.
Jack Stevenson also had three hits, and Ted Theiman and Paul Burnett had two hits each.
ADKOS, 19, Marco Community Bank, 4
ADKOS bats were smoking as it cruised to its first win. George Schnorr led ADKOS’ assault with a double and a triple for four RBIs and Manny Miyar had two doubles and two RBIs. Other contributors were Fuzzy Fazekas, Chester Dal Bianco and winning pitcher Jerry Garrett, each with two RBIs. Gary Grant had a two-run double for the Bank.
Rookies, 15, Cocomo’s, 14
In a slugfest, Rookies rallied from a 14-12 deficit in the bottom of seventh. Al Cenicola had a two-run triple to tie the game and Walt Daleske, who had five RBIs, drove in the winning run. Bill Voss and John Remhoff each had four hits, with Remhoff slamming a home run. Nick Brooks knocked out three hits, including two doubles. Cocomo’s Roger Wise, Joe Iuliano, Larry Laird Bob Myslivic, Lou Rubino, Bill Dauch, Frank Dooley, Charlie Zimmer, and Joe Kruze each had two hits. Wise had three RBIs, while John Ranieri slammed a two-run triple.
ADKOS, 15, Rookies, 8
ADKOS won its second game. George Dempsey had three hits, while Chester Dal Bianco, Dick Amiott and Doug Smith had two hits. Butch Monson and Amiott had two RBIs each. John Remhoff highlighted Rookies batting with three hits and two RBIs. Dean Lambros had three hits, while Michael Walsh, John Gill and Roger Fleming had two hits each, with Fleming driving in two runs.
Crazy Flamingo, 6, Cocomo’s, 3
Ted Theiman had two hits, including a three-run home run to power Flamingo past Cocomo’s. Paul Burnett had two hits, including a double, with Jack Patterson getting the win. Losing pitcher Roger Wise had two hits and a RBI.
Capt Brien’s, 13, Marco Community Bank, 3
Capt Brien’s scored five runs in the first inning on key hits by Dan Stanard, Jim Dorey and Pedro Perez. In the fifth inning Capt. Brien’s added five runs on a triple by Lee Dilk and RBI hits from Stan Sutphen and Stanard. Ed Ledger’s three-run RBI double in the sixth closed out the scoring for Capt Brien’s. The Bank’s runs came off hits by Ray Zielenski, Joe Furst, Keith Stought and Chuck Wilson.
Island Division Standings: Bertram Orthopedics and Sand Bar, 2-1, Cedar Bay and Nacho Mama’s, 1-2.
Marco Division Standing: ADKOS and Capt. Brien’s 2-0, Crazy Flamingo and Rookies, 1-1, Cocomo’s and Marco Community Bank, 0-2.
