Fishy, feathery, fun

Annual Mullet Fest this weekend in Goodland

Flocks of buzzards are arriving daily and party preparations are full speed ahead for the 25th Annual Goodland Stan’s and Sons Mullet Festival Kick Off Party on Friday from 6 to 10 p.m. at Stan’s Chickee Bar in Goodland with music by the Hot Damn Duo. The festivities continue Saturday with live music all day in addition to live music jamborees starting at noon Saturday and Sunday. “Well you know this is our 25th year, and I can’t say for certain that the buzzards fly in just for the Mullet Festival but it seems like there’s a lot more of them observed a few days before and we noticed a good sized flock on San Marco Road this morning,” stated King Buzzard Stan Gober, adding that trophies have been ordered and will be awarded for the various contests held during the festival.

“We make it (the festival) about as simple as you can make it so just come on down if you don’t want to register beforehand,” said Stan, noting that on Saturday the Fish Cleaning Contest take place at 3 p.m., and the Princess Buzzard Lope and the Best Costume Contests will begin at 4 p.m.

In addition, as in previous years, the Marco Island Fire Department volunteers will be serving hot dogs, and there will also be fried mullet dinners with baked beans, hush puppies and coleslaw on the side, smoked mullet, cocktails and beer all available on the premises both Saturday and Sunday, along with commemorative Mullet Festival T-shirts, souvenirs and Stan’s tapes will all be available at Island Woman.

“We’re expecting a good sized crowd, and they were saying we had anywhere’s from 5,00 to 10,000 attending over the three days and that probably includes people who came at least twice, Friday for the Kick Off party and Saturday for the Fish Cleaning and Princess Buzzard Lope events.

“One thing for sure, Sunday is usually our big day — weather permitting — when the two Queen Buzzard Lope contests take place and the only time I’ll be wearing my King Buzzard regalia,” said Stan, explaining that the Queen Buzzard Lope Best Costume Award and Dance Contest takes place on Sunday, followed by the Buzzard Lope Queen Contest beginning at 4 p.m. when queen wanna-bee’s flap their wings and do the Buzzard Lope on Stan’s stage.
