What a star spangled week it has been at the Greater Marco Family YMCA.

Summer Camp 2009 Week 4 was the place to be to learn about our nation’s history and have a fun time doing it. Activities were held throughout the week highlighting the birth of our nation and what it means to all of us.

Games and crafts included playing “protect the president dodge ball,” army versus navy kickball, and writing letters to the troops. The campers were thrilled to talk to Navy Petty Officer First Class Robert S. Bowman who visited the children and answered every question put to them.

Field trips this week included going to King Richard’s Water Park in Naples and bowling at Woodside Lanes.

Next week the camp theme is It’s a Small World. This theme week is always a great one with campers learning about different countries, and in this day and age, how small the world has become.

Field trips next week have our campers traveling to Ft. Myers to the Generation Roller Skating Arena. I remember going skating every Sunday afternoon at the roller rink back in Ohio, I had a blast and got to be pretty good at roller-skating. I could even skate backwards, really impressing the girls until the day I tripped and fell right on my butt. Not a pretty picture.

Adult coed volleyball got rained out last Monday. Next week games include ARA Insurance playing Naples Bobsled at 6 p.m., and Jukebox Productions take on the Marriott at 7 p.m.

Young ladies can get “fit and fabulous” with the Girl Scouts each Monday throughout the summer at the Y from 9 a.m. to noon. For more information on this program call Barbara Van Essen at 1-800-3186 ext. 404. The program fee is only $10, and the session runs through July 27.

Summer sign ups continue for the following programs:

Girls Volleyball, Little Kickers with Fitness and Youth Indoor Soccer, all starting on July 6.

British Challenger Soccer Camp begins on July 7.

Sport N Splash Swim Camp, Teen Boot Camp, Tai Chi for Kids, Scott Stewart Basketball, Swim Lessons with Dottie, and Junior tennis all start on July 13.

Guitar Camp with Lee Brovitz begins on July 20.

Zumba remains a crowd favorite, and in July an additional class has been scheduled with Carolina Nixon. She will be the instructor for the 5:30 p.m. class on Tuesdays. Other Zumba classes meet on Mondays at 6 p.m., Wednesdays at 9 a.m. and Saturdays at 8 a.m.

There is something for everyone at the Greater Marco Family YMCA. You don’t have to stay home. Come to a class or just work out in the fitness center. We’ll be glad to see you!

Enjoy a safe and glorious Fourth of July. See you at the Y.
