FAST FACTS
The Goodland Baptist Mission was established in the 1960s and held services at Tommie Barfield Elementary. They opened the Fist Baptist Church of Marco on Winterberry in 1980. In 2000, the youth minister, Ray Munyon, opened the present Goodland Baptist Church, and is still the pastor there.
The architecture is that of a simple and traditional protestant sect, and the attendance in summer is just under a hundred. The church obtained full independence from Fort Myers in 2008, as did the Baptist churches in Copeland and Everglades City.
The Goodland church has weekly Sunday School and adult services, and sponsored a food pantry for many years.
The associate pastor is Richard Hughes; with Ray’s wife Tammy Munyon serving as the secretary and right hand of the church. Music is managed by Robert Snyder, and provided by organist Carol John and pianist Beverly Boggs.
Visitors are welcome every Sunday at 11 a.m.
WHAT'S GOING ON AT THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
The MIHS is pleased to announce that the new Historical Museum under construction on Marco Island will feature an 8X40-foot mural depicting the Calusa culture. The mural will be based on original artwork produced for our 2008 Art Interprets History program, displaying visions of Marco Island’s past.
A distinguished panel of artists, art dealers, collectors and a historian has narrowed down the paintings produced for Art Interprets History to two examples, one by Paul Arsenault and one by Jonathan Green. The local community will have an opportunity to help decide which painting will become the mural and to participate in the purchase, with all the funds going back to the MIHS Building Fund.
Details are to be announced by Cindy Murlowski, Patty Carnes and Joanne Pasqua, co-chairing this special fundraising effort. M&I Bank is the proud sponsor of the mural project.
