Marco’s Amber Prange steps up to the varsity girls coaching position at Marco Island Charter Middle School.

Prange assisted Craig Fisher, who stepped down after seven years. Prange also was the sixth grade coach two years ago.

Prange was a star athlete in volleyball, basketball and softball at Lely. Her freshmen year the softball team place second in the Class 4A state softball championship. They also won two district titles and were regional runner-ups. She went on to play softball at Rollins College.

She taught seventh grade and sixth grade social studies at the Charter School two years ago, before going to the University of South Florida for a master’s degree in school counseling, which she has nearly completed.

She will serve as a maternity leave substitute teacher for sixth grade language arts at the Charter School in the fall.

She credits sports with making her a well-rounded person.

“Sports played a big part in character building for me,” she said. “It helped me develop to be the kind of person I am. Hard work, being a team player, dedication and perseverance are things I want to pass on to my team. Extra-curricular activities are a great way to help you ”

Prange’s team, which lost most of its scoring punch to graduation, will focus early on defense.

“Defense and speed will be our assets,” she said. “Most teams at this level don‘t shoot well. Playing strong defense will make a difference in the outcome.”

Her goal is to improve everyone’s basketball skills so that they will feel prepared to try out for the high school team, or to show improvement that will help them in another season at Charter School.

“I think she will do a real nice job,” said Roger Raymond, Charter School athletic director. “She worked with the sixth graders that will now be eighth graders on her team. They have a good relationship. She also assisted last year with our track team where more girls got to know her. I think she will do a good job on keeping the team focused and playing hard.”
