What will we be celebrating tomorrow, July 4, 2009? It’s been quite a few years since I studied American history, so I had to refresh my memory. During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the American colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that had been proposed in June. After voting for independence, Congress then focused on the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining their decision, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated for two days and revised the Declaration and finally approved it on July 4, 1776. In 1791 the holiday became known as Independence Day.
John Adams, who later became the first Vice President and second President of the United States, wrote, “It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.”
At the Marco Island Residents’ Beach we will try to live up to President Adams view of Independence Day. Between 11:30 and 12 noon look for a fly-over by the 482nd Fighter Wing from Homestead Air Force Base. What a patriotic addition to our July Fourth Celebration!
At Residents’ Beach “Uncle Sam’s Sand Jam” music will begin at noon and run through the fireworks, thanks to the Marco Eagle. Kids’ games and crafts begin at 1 p.m. and our inaugural hot dog eating contest starts at 3 p.m. Sandcastle winners will be announced at 5 p.m.
Paradise Grill will be selling their regular menu as well as the required Fourth of July burgers and hot dogs. MICA will also be selling beer and wine. The Kiwanis Club of Marco Island will offer t-shirts, hats and other July Fourth paraphernalia, such as glow necklaces and bracelets. The Marco Island VFW will be taking donations in exchange for a flag with the funds being applied to the memorial at Veteran’s Park.
Residents’ Beach members, bring your ID, sunblock, and smile! Remember, glass is not permitted anywhere on the beach. This is a state, county, and city law and subject to fine. Also, no personal fireworks are permitted on the beach. Again, violation is subject to fine. For more information about Residents’ Beach events, please call 642-7778.
