Eye on the Y: Stevie goes to camp: Week 1

Another exciting week has gone by at your Greater Marco YMCA.

The week started with the Greater Marco YMCA Coed Volleyball Championship Game played at the airnasium. Congrats to Rookies Bar whose team defeated ARA Insurance by a slim margin and took home the coveted Volleyball Championship trophy. The Summer 2009 Coed Volleyball League will begin on June 15. Enter your team to play for only $325. The deadline for sign-up is Wednesday.

Summer camp started June 3 and what a beginning it was. Children from all over Marco Island descended on the Y and enjoyed the first week’s activities based on the theme of “carnival.” Your child can enjoy a fun filled summer of activities here at the Y through Aug. 17. Each week is packed with games, sports, field trips and exciting Fun Fridays. Week two’s theme is Magical Enchanted Forest.

Children must be 5 years old by June 1. Age-appropriate activities are scheduled for children in grades K-2 and grades 3-6. Camp hours are 7:15 a.m. to 6 p.m. Both camps will meet at the south end of the YMCA for pick up and drop-off.

Sport & Splash Swim Camp begins on Monday. The camp will offer water sports, games, relays and swim instruction. Life jackets are available for first-time swimmers. This camp is open to boys and girls ages 5 and up. The camp will meet for the whole week at the Y’s Aquatics Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 2008 Bejing Olympics’ participant Mercedes Farhat is directing this activity. The fee is $70 for members and $95 for others.

Session two is scheduled for July 13 to 17 and session three for Aug. 10 to 14.

The second specialty camp starting Monday is the Martial Art of Tai Chi for Kids. Tai Chi promotes a positive sense of health and well being. This camp helps children breathe, focus, move, relax and relieve stress. Session to ne will be offered June 8 to 11 and June 15 to 18. This camp is open for ages 8 to 12 and will meet from 1 to 2 p.m. The fee is $55 for members and $75 for others.

Junior Tennis classes also start on Monday. Tiny Tots for ages 4 and 5 will play from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Little Slam Tennis for 6, 7 and 8 year olds is scheduled from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

Slam Jr. Tennis begins Tuesday for ages 8 through 11 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., and Mighty Slam Jr. Tennis for ages 11 and older also begins on Tuesday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The cost for each session is only $50 for members and $65 for others.

Zumba classes are now offered three times a week at the Y. Mark your calendar for 6 p.m. Monday nights, 9 a.m. Wednesday mornings and 7:45 a.m. Saturdays. Get ready to dance, sweat, and have a great time in this salsa-driven aerobic class!
