COLLIER COUNTY — Collier County commissioners today approved a tourism campaign that will run from July 1-Aug. 30.
The county's tourism bureau will spend $414,836 from an emergency fund on the promotional campaign. It will target the drive markets within a few hours of Naples: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Tampa and St. Petersburg.
The money for advertising and marketing for tourism comes from a tourist tax, which is a 4 percent charge on hotel rooms and other short-term stays.
The bureau needed to tap the emergency fund after running its first-ever winter campaign and moving its traditional spring-summer campaign up to early March to deal with a global economic slowdown.
There was no money left for promotion in the late summer.
