As the Los Angeles Lakers dismantled the Orlando Magic, critics heaped credit on Kobe Bryant, comparing him with Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.
No one bothered to talk about the coach who put a team together, as he did in Chicago and LA, to bring back the LA Lakers glory days.
The coach hardly caught a break the next day as broadcasters and writers deemed his record 10th NBA championship, a fluke of sorts.
Again critics said it was team talent, with no mention of the coach combining a team of lesser lights with Bryant to make an NBA championship team.
In comparison with Red Auerbach, he takes a back seat, critics said. Auerbach won eight straight championship with teams he built, winning nine overall. However, Auerbach did not take another team to the championship dance, like this coach did.
Auerbach didn’t have two three-peats with Chicago and another with Lakers, before this coach got his 10th on Sunday.
One critic actually hoisted up Greg Popovich’s winning four NBA titles with San Antonio, while not acknowledging that Popovich had the “Twin Towers,” David Robinson and Tim Duncan.
None of the other coaches authored a book that was used as an employee tutorial.
“The Sacred Hoops: Spiritual Lessons of a Hardwood Warrior,” was given to all Ingalls Hospital (Harvey, Ill.) directors and administrators as a motivational tool in 1995, at the start of the second three-peat for the Bulls.
OK, so now I may be stretching it a bit. But Phil Jackson has won nine titles in 14 years. He does get the most out of his cast of unique individuals.
Another comparison, won-lost percentages.
Using Wikipedia stats, Jackson’s regular season won-lost percentage is .705 and .695 for playoff games. Popovich, .675 regular season and .618 in playoffs. Using Boston Celtics information, Auerbach’s marks were .662 in regular season and .589 in playoffs.
