Frank E. Mackle III, executive vice president of the Deltona Corp., withdrew his company’s proposal to lease 250 feet of the Marco Island Residents’ Beach, following a heated discussion at a Marco Island Civic Association meeting on Monday night.
“All I hear are objections to our plan. If this is the kind of response Deltona receives, I think we should reconsider the proposal,” Mackle said. “This is all a waste of our time. I am upset and disappointed. We are formally withdrawing the proposal.”
Deltona wanted to lease the property for Deltona’s off-island residents.
Close to 100 signatures have been added to a petition requesting an extension of the Residents’ Beach parking lot curfew, Pete Matthews, co-author of the petition, said. Approximately 450 residents have signed the petition in opposition to the sunset-sunrise curfew for the beach parking lot. Matthews said he is anxious to meet with Leigh Plummer, MICA president, to discuss some suggestions for the parking lot. Matthews said the proposal has its good and bad points and needs to be discussed with Plummer.
Days Inn of America, a national hotel chain, has purchased a site on Marco Island and has begun preliminary studies for the construction a motel in the near future. The company has signed a purchase agreement for a 17-acre site on Elkcam Circle, just north of Collier Boulevard for $70,000. The site is north of First National Bank and Trust and south of Fire Station No. 1. It is waterfront property with 540 feet on a waterway leading directly to Factory Bay.
In a special promotion, the Marco Island Office of the First Nation Bank and Trust is offering six-month savings certificates at an annual rate of 9.047 percent, with a minimum of $10,000.
After months of debate, Charles DiFranco was named fire chief. He was hired in June, 1978, but was not seated until June 8 (1979) on a 2-1 vote. Commissioners George Stewart and Dr. George Hewson voted in favor, while Edwin Krupo voted against.
