Artificial reef to be built off Doctors Pass

— Collier County crews plan to start dropping 950 tons of concrete rubble Thursday off Doctors Pass to build an artificial reef.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission awarded the county a $60,000 grant in January to build the reef to provide offshore fish habitat and a place for divers to explore.

The county plans to drop concrete culverts, junction boxes and "other acceptable secondary concrete materials" in about 30 feet of water, more than 4 miles offshore of Doctors Pass, according to a county announcement this afternoon. The work will finish up Monday, the county says.

Collier County already has more than 100 artificial reefs.
