Kids dribbled, shot, rebounded, then dribbled again at the Ryan Bowen Basketball Camp.

Bowen is the new Lely varsity boys basketball coach and used the opportunity for the camp to get future Trojan basketballers to know him and learn sound fundamentals of basketball.

“This is a good way for me to get to be known in the community,” Bowen said.

Kids from Marco and East Naples attended the camp.

“I’d say that the level of the camp stepped up quickly when I saw each one of them could already dribble with their off hand,” Bowen said.

Six of the participants were Marco Island Charter Middle School basketball players.

“Roger Raymond (Charter coach) is an outstanding coach and his kids do very well,” Bowen said.

Will Bott, who will be an eighth grader at Charter this fall, showed he could shoot from three-point range. Christian Tateo, starting point guard for Lely and former Charter School star, went up against Bott in a three point challenge. It seemed Bott couldn’t miss, going around the arc in short fashion.

This was Bott’s fifth camp this summer. “I just want to get better and improve on what I need to for next season,” he said.

Jared Jackson, who will also be a Charter eighth grader, was at his fourth camp. “Last year the camps really helped, but I broke my arm and missed almost all of the basketball season,” he said. “My goal is to improve and play on varsity the whole season.”
