Nacho Mama’s gains on Bertram’s in senior softball

ADKOS loses, but maintains lead in Island Division

Rookies beat first-place ADKOS, then lost two games, allowing ADKOS to maintain its three-game lead in the Marco Division of the Marco Men’s Senior Softball League.

In the Island Division, Nacho Mama’s won two games to move within two games of league-leading Bertram Orthopedics.

Here are the results of the seventh week, with games reported in order of being played in each division.


Sand Bar, 13, Bertram Orthopedics, 8

Sand Bar scored six runs in the seventh inning, breaking open a tie game. Winning pitcher Lou Wolfenson had three hits, including a triple and three RBIs. Teammates Joe Cervelli, Tom Pugh, Pete Oellich, and Denny Lello each had three hits. Bertram’s John DeRosa had four hits and Art Weins and Herman Griffith three hits.

Nacho Mama’s, 9, Cedar Bay, 0

It was only the second shut of the season in the Island Division, thrown by Bill Griffin and Jack O’Brien, limiting Cedar Bay to only four hits. Tom McCullough had three hits for Nacho’s and Jimmy Cuevas had three RBIs. John Barrett and Dom Fiorda each drove in two runs. Rich Krumholz and Fiorda had triples for Nacho Mama’s.

Bertram Orthopedics, 12, Cedar Bay, 2

John DeRosa continued his torrid hitting streak, going 3-for-3 and driving in three runs. Jerry Engel and Herm Griffith each had three hits. Engel and John Cavanagh each drove in two runs. Griffith and Fran Roche each hit a triple for Bertram’s. Dan Dumbauld had three hits and a RBI, while Jerry Cnudde, Craig Cunningham and Paul Shelton each had two hits for Cedar Bay.

Nacho Mama’s, 14, Sand Bar, 2

Tom McCullough and Jimmy Cuevas went 4-for-4. Rich Krumholz and John Barrett had three hits, with Barrett knocking in three runs, two coming on a home run. Fran Diotte, Dom Fiorda and McCullough all drove in two runs for Nacho Mama’s. Tom Pugh, Ron Peterson, and Denny Lello each had two hits, with Lello slamming a triple for Sand Bar.


Rookies, 10, ADKOS, 8

Rookies temporarily narrowed the ADKOS lead to one game. Nick Brooks knocked out two hits, garnering four RBIs. Al Cenicola had two hits and two RBIs and winning pitcher Ed Kopecky had two hits and a RBI for Rookies. ADKOS power-hitting Pat Coraggio had three hits, including a three-run home run as he accounted for four RBIs. George Schnorr had three hits, including two doubles and Fuzzy Fazekas slammed a triple.

Cocomo’s, 5, Crazy Flamingo, 4

Cocomo’s held off a late-game rally to earn their fifth win. It was a pitcher’s battle between winner Roger Wise and Jim Monnier. Bill Dauch had two hits and drove in the winning run for Cocomo’s. Tom Paterson, Joe Wescott, and Ralph Leiterding each had two hits for Flamingo.

Marco Community Bank, 14, Capt. Brien’s, 8

Butch Coursen was 4-for-4 and Bruce Steele and Don Wetzel each went 3-for-3, with Steele driving in three runs. Winning pitcher Joe Furst had three hits and four RBIs. Lou Wolfenson had three RBIs, two on a home run and Bill Moors drove in two runs for Capt. Brien’s.

Crazy Flamingo’s, 12, Marco Community Bank, 9

Crazy Flamingo ended the Bank’s winning streak at six games. Joe Westcott and Ralph Leiterding each stroked triples, with Westcott getting three RBIs and Leiterding two. Jack Stevenson had three hits and Sonny Emerling, Chuck Cornille, Paul Burnett, and Dick DeAnna each had two hits. Ray Zielinski had three hits and two RBIs for the Bank. Bruce Steele, Gary Grant, Chuck Wilson, and Fred Toxopeas each had two hits, with Steele driving in two runs.

Capt. Brien’s, 11, Rookies, 7

Capt. Brien’s scored six runs in the first and four more in the fourth to put the game out reach. Mike Galatis had three hits, while teammates Dan Stanard, Dan O’Sullivan, Jim Dorey and Lou Wolfenson each had two hits. Wolfenson was the winning pitcher and drove in three runs. Rookies Walt Daleske, Nick Brooks and Charlie Zimmer each had three hits, Bill Himsel and John Remhoff had two hits each. Roger Fleming knocked in two runs.

ADKOS, 13, Cocomo’s, 10

Adkos was led by Pat Coraggio who hit a three run home run. Pitcher Jerry Garrett won his 15th game. Cocomo’s Mel Mandel, Don Schwartz and George Swerver each had two hits.

Cocomo’s, 11, Capt. Brien’s, 5

Don Schwartz, winning pitcher Roger Wise and Frank Dooley all had three hits, with Schwartz driving in three runs. Barry Meir and Charley Zimmer contributed two hits and two RBIs. Zimmer, Wise and Butch Monson had triples for Cocomo’s. Lee Dilk drove in two runs for Capt. Brien’s.

Marco Community Bank, 11, Rookies, 3

Chuck Wilson had three hits, including a triple and three RBIs for the Bank. Teammates Dave Swibb and Butch Coursen drove in two runs each and John Gamble and Coursen had two hits. Roger Fleming had two hits, including a double for Rookies.

ADKOS, 9, Crazy Flamingo, 8

Pat Coraggio had three hits, including a key RBI double in the bottom of the seventh, driving in the winning run. Flamingo had just tied the game in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs to make the score 8-8. John Arceri had two hits and two RBIs, while Fred Kramer knocked in the tying run. Jim Monnier had two RBIs, Jack Stevenson and Sonny Emerling each had two hits and a RBI for Flamingo. Winning pitcher Jerry Garrett made some stellar defensive plays on the mound and was supported by George Schnorr, Chet Dal BIanco and George Dempsey with two hits each. Dempsey knocked in two runs.
