For the Love of Cats, the rescue and shelter on Marco Island, is hosting a wine tasting fundraising event at the Marco Island Yacht Club, from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 4.

Lovers of wine and felines are invited to a wonderful boutique wine tasting that offers a selection of unique wines donated by Island Liquors on Marco Island. Enjoy elegant hot and cold hors d’oeuvres while you critique the different wines from around the world and engage in a delightful silent auction of baskets full of fine wine, champagne, gourmet food and other goodies.

We had a wine tasting event in 2007 and everyone just loved it. The wine selection was amazing and we helped to raise urgently needed funds for our shelter.

The wine tasting event this year will raise funds needed to help the organization continue to take in abandoned house cats that are the ultimate victim in these difficult economic times.

“Last year, we took in almost 50 abandoned cats on Marco Island alone. We don’t expect that number to diminish in the next several years. Many of these cats need extensive veterinary care so our costs have increased substantially,” said Linda Levine, shelter manager.

For the Love of Cats offers more than a no-kill shelter to the community. Their services include offering low cost spay/neuter assistance, educational materials and resources for low income families to help them keep their pets.

“We are helping people all over Collier County in an effort to stem the tide of pet abandonment. Whatever we can do, whether it is giving out donated food or giving people options and resources, we are trying to keep the cats from being abandoned or surrendered to Domestic Animal Services where 90 percent of the cats are killed,” said Jim Rich, vice president.

For the Love of Cats has been rescuing and sterilizing cats and kittens on Marco Island and in Collier County since 2002. They have rescued and adopted over 1,000 cats and kittens and sterilized over 500 free roaming cats. The organization is a non-profit, all volunteer group operating through the generous donations of the community.

Reservations for the Wine Tasting are $45 per person or $80 per couple and can be made online at www.floridacatrescue.com or by calling For the Love of Cats at 642-8674. Payment at the door by Visa, Mastercard, cash or check. Walk-ins welcome. Dress is country club smart casual.
