David O. Stewart, authority on the Constitution, and former Chief Clerk to Supreme Court Justice Lewis Powell, will speak at the third event of the Saul I. Stern Cultural Series at the Jewish Congregation of Marco Island, 991 Winterberry Road, 7:30 p.m., Sunday.
Stewart, the author of the “The Summer of 1787: The Men Who Invented the Constitution,” will tell his audience about the gossip, bargains, compromises — the inside story behind the creation of one of the world’s greatest documents — the Constitution of the United States.
The speaker, graduate of Yale and Yale Law School, has been involved as counsel in many important legal cases. Stewart was the lead counsel in representing Richard Nixon in his impeachment trial before the United States Senate. He became so interested in the process, that his latest book, soon to be published, is about impeachment — ”The Impeachment of Andrew Johnson.”
A question and answer period follows. The audience is invited to a reception to meet the speaker and a book signing after the event.
Tickets are $20 for member and $25 for non-members. For information, call the Synagogue office at 642-0800.
