There was some tremendous tennis played in the Marco Island Tennis and Racquetball Championships.

Chris Vogt, from Indianapolis, came to Marco on his honeymoon and shared in the Men’s 3.5 doubles championship with his father-in-law Ken Planck. Chris married Cheryl, the daughter of Ken and Bonnie Planck, who are winter residents here.

Vogt then teamed with Gary Carey to win the Racquetball A Doubles.

Vogt and Planck edged Corky and Ron Trebilcock. They lost the first set, 6-3, but rebounded with a 7-5 second set win and closed out with a 10-point tie-break win at 10-6.

In the racquetball match, Vogt and Carey defeated Jim Timmerman and Axel McGuffie, 15-3, 15-2. It was the second straight year that Vogt-Carey had downed Timmerman-McGuffie in the racquetball finals.

Another double winner was Jackie Pham. She won the 4.0 singles over Beck Bortz, 6-2 and 6-0, then shared the 4.0 doubles win with Carol Bidinger, downing Cheryl Toth and Rachael Schenk, 6-2, 6-2.
