The Marco Island Sail & Power Squadron recently completed its first winter season public safe boating course. Educational officer Lt/C Carl Thieme announced that 15 students passed the final exam. The course is taught several times per year with the next course beginning March 16. The four evening course covers Boat Handling & Seamanship, Needed Equipment, Rules of the Road, Lines & Knots, Charts & Aids to Navigation, Engine Troubleshooting, Boat Trailering and more, leading to a better understanding of boats, boating, and the rules in place for the safe operation of pleasure craft in local waters. There will be an additional, optional class devoted to charting. The course is provided free of charge to students, as a public service. Upon successful completion of the course the students are invited to have a squadron member join them on their boat for a guided trip around Marco Island followed by lunch at an Island club or restaurant. All graduates will be issued a Florida State Boater Safety Education ID card. For further information call Cliff Winings at 394-2344
