Lely's top scorer Marco's Gabby Lopez goes for the ball in the Lady Trojans' battle against Palmetto Ridge in Class 4A-District 12 playoff action. Lopez has been named 4A Player of the Year by the Florida Athletic Coaches Association.

The Lely High School athletic program again showed its value as Gabby Lopez and Parker Ayers, both Marco products, were named the top athletes in their respective sports in the state for Class 4A.

A record-setting scorer for Lely in soccer, Lopez also was named to the Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Star team, scoring a goal in her team’s win.

Lopez set a school record of 40 goals this season, adding 20 assists. She also has the school record of 99 total goals over three seasons.

Ayers, averaged 16 points a game, leading the Lely basketball team to the elite eight in the state 4A playoffs.

He led the Trojans in scoring with 427 points and rebounding with 271. Very agile for his 6-foot-6-inch frame, Ayers had 24 assists, 37 steals and 51 blocked shots.

He, too played in the FACA All-Star game, scoring 11 points. In the Collier County All-Star game on Wednesday night, he led the South team to a win, scoring 17 points.

Lopez’s teammate, Dallan Diaz, was among 4A players named to the All-State Academic team.

Lely’s Victoria Howard also shined for Lely on Wednesday night, leading her South team to victory by sinking a last-second three point shot. She finished with 15 points, scoring eight in the last quarter.

After the game she was honored with a $1,000 scholarship from the Collier Sports Officials Association, which sponsored the all-star game.

Lopez and Ayers write about their thoughts on winning the 4A awards and on their athletic careers in the March 27 Eagle.
