On the dog park ...
I would like to comment on the shortsighted letter, written by Arthur Neubauer (Eagle, March 25). In his letter, the writer stated that “If there is to be a dog park at Mackle Park, benefitting no one but dog owners, rather obviously it should be set up so that our city’s taxpayers do not carry the burden of paying for its maintenance.”
I’d like to remind this letter writer that taxpayers rarely get to choose how and where their taxes are spent. If taxpayers actually had this choice, they would likely vote against paying taxes for anything that does not directly benefit them. For example, many taxpayers would opt not to pay taxes for schools, which represent the single largest tax expenditure, unless they had young children in the school system. Clearly, the writer’s position, taken to its logical conclusion, is most unwise.
I would also like to remind the letter writer that there are many dog owners on Marco Island and they are taxpayers!
Hopefully, the letter writer will rethink his insular and intolerant position.
