MICA: A sea of food and fun at weekend fest

Memories of my favorite vacations with my wife are coming back to me again. Each year we would work very hard while dreaming of our upcoming vacation. There was no real time off except for an occasional Sunday to relax and recoup.

Our best vacations included two days at the Fort Lauderdale Cajun/Zydeco Music Festival, presented by the city’s parks and recreation department. The seafood, music, the dancing and the fantastic New Orleans crawfish, seafood gumbos and jambalaya were some of the best foods I have ever eaten.

We met so many people there year after year and some became lifelong friends. It brought a great spirit to the city.

Monday morning, with very tired feet and huge smiles on our faces, we drove to Marco Island and stayed at the Hilton Hotel for a week to round out our vacation.

The Kiwanis Club of Marco Island, together with both Rotary clubs on Marco, have joined forces to create The Marco Island Seafood Festival. The Festival will be held at Veterans Park on Marco Island this weekend.

There will be seafood vendors from around the state as well as local vendors. Paradise Seafood Company and Nacho Mamas will represent our local favorites! There will be three live bands each day for your listening and dancing pleasure. Please visit our Web site at MarcoIslandSeafoodFestival.com for details.

I will be working all day both days and will not have the opportunity to have as much fun as the residents attending or folks vacationing on our Island. But you can wake up in the morning and stroll the beach with your morning coffee. You will probably see beautiful flocks of birds feeding as well as dolphins swimming by in the pristine Gulf of Mexico. Do stay at the beach for a while to take in the fresh air, but not all day! Please come early to the Seafood Festival. We are expecting a good crowd.

Music will begin at noon and go all day. The gates open at 11 a.m. There will be offsite parking at the Marco Healthcare Center with bus transportation. The bus route is posted on the Web site and will service most Collier Boulevard condos and hotels. Please bring lawn chairs for festival seating. We hope to see you at the Marco Island Seafood Festival!

Residents’ Beach members, please also jot down two more upcoming events on your schedule — 5 p.m. on April 4 and April 26. We are looking forward to showcasing the young musical talent of the Lely High School Jazz Band on April 4 and the “more developed” skills of the oldies group “Magic Moments” on April 26. Both will be held on the green, so bring your lawn chair, blanket and Residents’ Beach ID.

If you’d like further information, please call the MICA office at 239-642-7778.
