Watching the PBS “Nightly Business Report” on May 15. I learned that the Obama Stimulus Plan will build the long needed companion lanes to the “S.S. Jolley Bridge” onto Marco.
Recalling when the island had only the old Goodland swing bridge it always seemed odd that the county chose to name that vital access after an obscure official who never resided on Marco. Perhaps now is a chance to give the bridges a more tropical flair while keeping the historic name.
South Florida musician Jimmy Buffett wrote a calypso-style song called “Jolly Mon Sing” about the music and joy of island living. The last verse is, “All the island people when they wish upon a star, see the dolphin and the jolly mon tell them where they are.”
Recently Mr. Buffet performed at the renaming of the Miami Dolphins’ “Landshark Stadium.”
An occasional visitor to Marco, perhaps he could be induced to appear at the opening and renaming of the new bridge. After all, “a little whimsy now and then is cherished by the wisest men” — W. Wonka.
