MARCO ISLAND — Marco Island police are investigating a Sunday night shooting as an attempted suicide.
City spokeswoman Lisa Douglass said dispatchers received a call around 7:30 Sunday about a suicidal person on the Judge S.S. Jolley Bridge linking Marco Island to the mainland. When investigators arrived on scene, the call had changed to say the person was unconscious just off the bridge on the Marco Island side .
Marco Island Police Officers responded and found a white male in his 20s unconscious in the fishing area on the Marco Island side of the bridge, Douglass said, suffering from an apparent small-caliber gunshot wound to the head.
The man was transported in critical condition to the NCH Healthcare Center Marco Campus, and from there taken by MedFlight to Lee Memorial Hospital, the nearest trauma unit in Southwest Florida, Douglass said.
