Fast facts
Just six people attended the first service on Marco for Presbyterians, and for three years the services continued only in high season.
With no building of their own, the congregation gathered at the Jossberger Funeral Home, the Marco Beach Hotel or The Art League.
In 1984 the first permanent building for the church was opened, and in 1988 the Reverend Dr. Bruce Fiol came to Marco as the first pastor.
Dr. and Mrs. Fiol had served for 17 years as missionaries in India. They oversaw the addition to the first building in 1991 and the erection of the new modern structure presently in use in 2002. The congregation belongs to the Presbyterian Church of America, and the current minister is Marvin Lyle; Dr. Fiol retired in 2008.
The music and choir director is Babs Hillenbrand, who also leads the bell ringers, and the Family and Youth Minister is Paul May.
Note: Some of the pictures and information for this continuing series on the local churches is based on a booklet called “Religions of Marco,” written by Frederic Gloeckner with photos by Arthur Leuthe.
Bronze sculpture of the Key Marco Cat is donated
Emil and Gail Fischer of Green Bay, Wisconsin and Marco island, have donated $12,500 to the museum for the commission of a six-foot-tall bronze Key Marco Cat to be placed on the grounds of the new museum.
Carl Wagner, Naples artist and sculptor, has been commissioned to construct the cat. Wagner will create a clay model to be approved by the Marco Museum committee, and the sculpture will then be cast into bronze.
Wagner expects to complete the mold and casting by the end of the year and to deliver the piece in early January of 2010.
Marion Nicolay and Betsy Perdichizzi of the Marco Island Historical Society are compiling this report on a weekly basis for the Eagle. Shirley Beckwith oversees the archiving of photos for MIHS.
