MARCO ISLAND — Marco Island Academy and Discovery Center is hosting a grand opening fundraiser scheduled 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009 at CJ’s on the Bay at the Esplanade.

Marco Island Academy and Discovery Center, which is proposing a charter high school centered around a larger environmentally-conscious campus open to the community, is celebrating the opening of their office located in Suite 107 at the Esplanade.

The Marco Island Charter Middle School Band will be performing at 5:30 p.m.. Dancers from Spotlight Dance Studio will also be performing at the event.

“Please join us for a night of fun, food, dance and music at CJ’s.”

Merchandise will be available for purchase.

The Marco Island Academy and Discovery Center’s office is open 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday with extended evening hours until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

“We encourage you to stop by and learn more about the project. We are also looking for more volunteers to help in the office.”

“The focus of the Marco Island Academy is on the core curriculum with a unique hands-on learning approach.”

Organizers plan for the academy to offer various after school clubs and programs, which includes an athletics program.

“In addition, our partnership with the Jean-Michel Cousteau Ocean Future’s Society allows us to feature programs to emphasize the need to be better stewards of our natural resources and teach us about our local Living Laboratory.”

The Marco Island Academy and Discovery Center is planned to be a LEED certified campus featuring state-of-the-art sustainable technologies to reduce energy consumption, water consumption and waste production, while improving indoor environmental quality.
