In her guest commentary published Wednesday, Martha Simons’ meretricious effusion over Bonita Springs District 5’s “unbelievable support” more appropriately should be an expression of gratitude for that district’s chronic apathy as she prepared to become the second council person by default out of six, a percentage just short of those suffering from obesity, but surpassing victims of alopecia.
The artful genius of Simon’s effusion is that, after dutifully caressing the standard hot-button issues — e.g., our economy, jobs, local business, so-called revitalization, city services, crime, safety, roads, water, etc. — her tract can be relegated to cryogenic storage, exhumed quadrennially, thawed, dusted off and trotted out again, ad infinitum, with no one the wiser.
The journey from one candidate to no candidates is short. What then, Bonita?
