MARCO ISLAND — Marco Island currently has two parks that may be too similarly named. One is the new Veterans’ Community Park on Elkcam Circle. The other is Veterans’ Memorial Park on North Barfield Drive.
City Manager Steve Thompson announced a contest to rename the smaller of the parks in a prepared release to council and the community Wednesday.
After acquiring seven acres of new land on Elkcam Circle, in 2005, the City Council voted to re-name this park land, commonly referred to as the “Glon Property” or the “Park Avenue Property,” to the “Veterans’ Community Park”.
Since a small park, located at the corner of North Collier Boulevard and North Barfield Drive was already named Veterans’ Memorial Park, the City Council authorized a renaming contest to name the existing park.
The residents of Marco Island are now invited to submit nominations to re-name Veterans’ Memorial Park. Nominations may be submitted to the Parks and Recreation Department from now through Jan. 31. On Feb. 16, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee will select finalists from all the names submitted. Residents will then have an opportunity to vote for one of the finalists between Feb. 16 and March 15. The PRAC will record the votes on March 16 and submit to the City Council for final action on April 5. Contest forms are available at City Hall, 51 Bald Eagle Drive, the city Web site, cityofmarcoisland.com and in the related documents linked to the upper left of this story.
