Lely High coaches are being featured so that Lely fans can get to know more about them. Each coach has supplied their information. Today it is Marco’s Paul Johnson, girls basketball coach.

Sport: Girls Basketball

Head coach: Paul Johnson

Education: Methodist College and University of North Carolina at Greensboro .

How did you get interested in coaching? I started by assisting at the age of 14 with recreation basketball and volunteered as a coach at the age of 18 at the Fayetteville, N.C. YMCA.

Did you play your sport prior to becoming a coach? I played basketball, baseball and football in high school. I was offered a chance to play at Pfieffer University, Raleigh, N.C., but turned it down due to the lack of enough scholarship money.

How long have you been coaching? This is my first year as coach here in Florida, but I coached in North Carolina for seven years

Outlook for this year: This is a rebuilding year for the team. We lost four starters from last year and five seniors. We have a lot of players that have come up from JV, but they don’t have a lot of experience. It will take time to build confidence in the program and for players to understand the new system with a new coach.
