— A slight twist on the traditional ribbon cutting, a grand opening of Marco’s newest dog park, Canine Cove, will begin with a ceremonious cutting of a dog leash Saturday.

The new off-leash dog park with one fenced-in area for large dogs and one for small dogs was a long-time in the making in terms of obtaining city approval, planning the site and then finally raising the money.

“In this economy it’s quite an accomplishment to raise $52,000 for the dog park,” said City Public Information Coordinator Lisa Douglass.

“We raised the money in three short months, in the off-season when no one was here,” said Jan Temkiewicz, a board member of the Friends of Canine Cove, which is the non-profit organization founded with the purpose of raising money for the dog park.

Friends of Canine Cove exceeded their initial $35,000 fundraising goal, giving the community a dog park with construction not paid for through residents’ tax dollars.

People and their four-legged friends are invited to the grand opening event, which is situated within Mackle Park on Andalusia Terrace.

When entering the park, the dog runs are located in the far right corner past the large lake. The run for large dogs is 1.25 acres and the small dog run is just less than 1/4 acre.

The event is 11 a.m., Sat., at 1361 Andalusia Terrace.

Great news ... next the City of Marco is planning a cat park, then maybe just maybe a bird aviary.

How long will it before the problems start--loose dogs, dog fights, another child bitten? How many hours did city workers spend on this poroject and was the city reimbursed for the money spent on payroll?

It won’t be to long before the Dog Park starts taking a Bit out of the City’s Budget and Taxpayers Wallets. Due to the fact that the Dog Park Developers neglected to make sure the Dog Park was built to be in compliance with the ADA Codes! Therefore people with Licensed Service Dogs particularly the Blind and Wheelchair users some of whom are Veterans will be excluded from being able to participate and have fun with there Dogs at the Park. When I questioned the Parks Director he said they didn’t have enough money to make it Accessible. Well if the City would strictly enforce the Parking Over the Sidewalk Laws 24hrs 7days a week and not just occasionally, there would surely be enough money collected to Help Fund small Island Projects like this one as needed. It is very obvious that the Marco Dog Park did not receive an inspection by a licensed inspector that was knowledgeable of the ADA Codes or the Dog Park never would have been permitted to open in the first place. I’m starting to feel like maybe Marco Island would prefer that Americans with Disabilities didn’t even live on the Island. Guess what I’m here to stay and so are the ADA Code Compliance Fines!
