Phew. That was close.
Lee County commissioners almost turned off street lights for part of the night on six busy roads — including Three Oaks and Ben Hill Griffin parkways, both between Alico and Corkscrew roads, and Bonita Beach Road between Windsor Road and Spanish Wells and between Old 41 Road and Interstate 75 in the Bonita/Estero area — in order to save money.
Everybody understands stretching dollars these days, but turning off street lights?
In advance of the commissioners’ eventual decision to leave those lights on, we encouraged them to look for other ways to economize. We offer that same advice in view of a staff member’s suggestion in lieu of turning off the lights — delaying the replacement of stolen or knocked-down stop signs.
