JO-ANN SANBORN
“Summer Sunset”
20 x 24 inches, completed 2009; acrylic on canvas
Where in South Florida do you work? Marco Island
How long have you been working in this medium? I have been working almost 15 years in acrylic.
Tell us about yourself: I have exhibited my paintings from Marco Island to Gloucester, Mass. The Florida landscape provides unlimited inspiration and has become the focus of my work. My strong compositional arrangements combined with uncommon colors bring a simplicity and integrity to the unique landscape.
I look at my paintings anew through your eyes. It is my fondest hope that you will look at the landscape anew through mine.
Studies: Graduated from Becker College, foundation art courses at Hartford Community College; continually self-study and workshops
What do you like about this work? “Summer Sunset” is an acrylic on canvas depicting the sun through the clouds as it nears the horizon. All my canvases are toned a warm dark, and I paint thin layers building up the forms and then carving around them until I am satisfied with the surface. Nature is at its finest at the edges of day, and although my forms are the familiar landscape forms of clouds, palms, water, light, I strive to capture the moments when light and nature come together as a fleeting gift, never to be seen exactly that way again.
Where can people see your work? I have just opened Artist Colony at the Esplanade, 760 N. Collier Blvd., Marco Island
