Letter to the Editor: Please tell me why

Article Highlights

  • Tell me why our City needs a professional spokesperson.

Tell me why the condos sewer/water base rates are as much as one-fifth of the single family homes.

Tell me why anyone should respect a city management that has not only covered up several HORRENDOUS environmental crimes, but actually gone out of their way to blame its citizens for them.

Tell me why we purchased the Glon property for $5 million over appraisal.

Tell me why we need a miniature Houston Mission Control to run the dilapidated sewer and water system.

Tell me why the video survey of the sewer pipes could not be released until after the election.

Tell me why Marco would sponsor a $100,000 contest to design a simple bridge no different than so many others; a bridge that is not even in need of replacement yet.

Tell me why Marco replaces beautiful, relatively new playground equipment with a million dollar theme park for children of pre-school age on an island with an average age of 60.5 years.

Tell me why we needed a million dollar spray park for these same hoards of children.

Tell me which system has the potential for polluting our Island more: septic or sewer? Which has ALREADY polluted more?

Tell me which segment of the population HAD TO HAVE a sewer system to survive. Then tell me who has been targeted to pay for it.

Tell me why the forensic audit didn’t cause any prosecution, penalties or even a slap on the wrist. (They didn’t have enough accountants at Enron either.)

Tell me why we keep a “retired,” questionable accountant as a consultant at a greater number than his previous salary.

Tell me why Marco has not been fined or prosecuted for misappropriating our electric franchise fees.

Tell me why our City needs a professional spokesperson.

Tell me why you are all so proud that we can rip off the Federal Government for $28 million to build a bridge that is yet unnecessary… let alone that like a large pipe, it sends four lanes of traffic onto a teeny island with nowhere to go. In whose interest is that?

Tell me why we have our own police department while subsidizing a far greater county department at HUGE additional cost.

Tell me why we spend $30,000 per student to send them to a “D” rated high school.

Tell me why we hire a Parks and Recreation Department head and then approve HIS hiring a $100,000 consultant to make recommendations (a few years back).

Tell me why we awarded the City Manager a $16,000 bonus to purchase an overpriced, run down sewer and water utility. (We did!)

Tell me why our engineers need consultants at all. Why don’t we just hire them instead?

Tell me why we buy a $50,000 (unbelievably inflated) piece of “art” that we can’t find anyone willing to display. Where in our charter does it discuss philanthropy?

Are you still with me? I could go on for at least another two or three paragraphs, but I have hit some of the highlights. The point is that the City is out of control and spinning into a vortex. NO ONE is standing up and saying “enough is enough.” Not only that, but incredibly, we hire a $200,000 “professional” to get all of this done for us. I am willing to bet that there are any number of citizens that would volunteer to clean up this mess at no cost to the City (I would), and the “usual suspects” would no longer have to waste their valuable time on any committees either.

I wish that I could write like John Grisham. I believe that the story of Marco Island would be a best seller like “The Firm.”

More misinformation jw! The Marco Man cost the city $10k not $50k. As for the parks, you are so detached from Marco Island and its residents its crazy. There were hundreds of Island volunteers who built that park for our children in the rain. My husband and I, our friends, grandparents, children and many civic minded people joined together to make a wonderful park for our kids. Why were'nt you there Mr. Putnam? Don't bother answering that, you were probably at your full-time residence up north somewhere. It amazes me that the people who complain the most do the least!

Why John, just when I thought we were getting along so well. You really don't know much about Marco and it's people, our sense of community. Flowerpower, I helped build KidsCove also and it was a wonderful community event that I will never forget.

Lisa,

Why would I support a cause that I have no interest in? I pay taxes for infrastructure, not for luxuries. I have no objection to toys for children, but then I wonder why you aren't helping me to build a "free" motorcycle clubhouse for my friends with Harleys! Why?

You know Lisa, democracy fails when the minority is able to vote themselves largess. True. Touchville.
