Letter to the Editor: Political failures nothing new on Marco

Article Highlights

  • Thank you for carrying the democracy ball for We, the People, during this hiatus in Marco Island’s continuing journey to mediocrity.
  • As we have all learned, we citizens remain the recipients of their SINS (a popular political science acronym to describe the uncivil behaviors of uber citizens).
  • Might I humbly suggest that you copy our news media whenever you compose and send messages and/or responses to our elected officials and their minions and sycophants?

This was sent to John Putnam and a host of citizens active in current political affairs and published commentary on Marco Island. The City Council also got a copy.

Dear John,

Thank you for carrying the democracy ball for We, the People, during this hiatus in Marco Island’s continuing journey to mediocrity, coarseness and abject balkanization with destructive polarization as we approach yet another City Council election.

With the FY2010 fiasco behind us, we continue to face doom and gloom thanks to the shenanigans of our elected officials who reside somewhere in the Twilight Zone and refuse to acknowledge and understand the economic anxieties and capital angst we citizens and all Americans have experienced for the past year or so. Thus, we citizens remain frustrated, confused and angry as our media voices, LetEds, blogs, e-mails and surveys (i.e., Dr. Biles’ MITA October newsletter) so glaringly demonstrate on Marco Island week after week.

We are grateful to you and other concerned citizens (Roger Hall, the Enmans, the Glaubs, Bob Brown, Joe Batte, Bill McMullan, Amadeo Petricca, Ken Honecker, Linda McClure, Russ Colombo,

et al.) for cultivating the chorus of rebukes, hortatory nonsense, too many quids without a single quo, and diminishing, sputtering relevance that you all reap from some city councilors, Chamber of Commerce and Realtor Assocation members and their selfish cronies and self-anointed elites along with their “profit and gain” lobbyists and special interests at the expense of all citizens.

As we have all learned, we citizens remain the recipients of their SINS (a popular political science acronym to describe the uncivil behaviors of uber citizens): SHIFT the argument; IGNORE the facts; NAME-CALL as an acceptable political tactic; and SANCTIFY all governmental changes, abuses and excesses as responses to citizens’ demands without an iota of valid data, open debate, free discourse and transparent decision-making including public referendums. In short, the uber statists that we now view with alarm within President Obama’s White House and our pathetic, boorish and debauched U.S. Congress appear to have been operational on our fragile Marco Island for the past decade or so. Indeed, their SINS indicate that they really believe they are “more equal” than we so-called, derisively viewed “ordinary citizens.” Sadly, Orwell seems alive and well on our once-exceptional barrier island community.

We also appreciate Dr. Mario Sanchez’s recent work on our behalf as cited on his www.marcoislandblog.blogspot.com. Please continue to help his vigorous pursuit of truth, justice and the American way in all things government but, especially, whenever our general well-being, health and safety are at stake.

Might I humbly suggest that you copy our news media whenever you compose and send messages and/or responses to our elected officials and their minions and sycophants?

Our local editors: Bill Green, Eagle: bdgreen@marcoeagle.com and Joe Taylor, Sun Times: editor@misuntimes.com, are most cordial and helpful in assuring that all citizens shall be heard via our very proactive free press.

Again, thanks for your leadership.

I have three pieces of sage advice for you Sayre:

#1 Get a new group of friends

#2 Throw the Thesaurus away

#3 Run for City Council because you seem to have all the answers

I also have some advice....why don't you and JWP move...you guys are annoying!

Never in my 30 years on this island have I ever seen such arrogant and irritating individuals. Putnam and Uhler write LTE every week...why does the Eagle countinue to publish such nonsense? They have vacation homes on Marco and make more noise than all of the permanent residents put together.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Another LTE for the records. This one actually listed all the members of the minority that abuses the phrase, "We The People". There you have it folks. Count the names in the LTE and compare that to the "nameless (silent) majority" (about 6,000 strong) that disagree with this LTE and actually feel that the three past City Council's have done an excellent job in representing the "Will Of The People".
This a a great society where we can all respect one and other for our opinions. It is a shame when there are some that just want to outright LIE when it comes to putting those opinions in perspective with those of the MAJORITY.
I have news for those named in the LTE. If history on Marco island tells us anything, you will remain a minority for many, many years to come. That is okay and we still respect you. But the majority of us have a different vision for this Island than you do. You can continue with your "Negativism" and I encourage you to do so. It only makes keeping a Positive majority on the Council that much easier. These letters and blogs will not disappear, I assure you. You will see them again during the campaign. Keep them coming, as they boost the point better than anyone in the majority can !!!!!
The last point to be made is the letter actually lists the names of almost all the bloggers that post the negatiive and critical messages you read on this site on a daily basis. Hopefully for those "on the fence" you now have a better understanding of how few people there actually are in this group.

Correction: I said MAJORITY (above) and I should have been more specific and said VOTING MAJORITY, as the majority from the last election was 62% of those that voted.
I do not want to do the same as those I am accusing of abusing the term "We The People".
But we can all agree that the voting citizens are those that determine the vision for the Island and elects those that will lead us there. In other words, as defined in a Democracy, the MAJORITY.

I would also like to put into question that statement about what Mario Sanchez is doing for "us". Just like what Mr. Foster did for "us". I am not talking in terms of their definition of asbestos and the like, but the measured definition of friable, the effect and what the EPA did and the tax money it cost Marco and now the Federal Tax money it is costing for political BS and ego satisfying efforts. We (6,000) of us just never cared and do not care and we want nothing to do with this. So we encourage Mr. Sanchez to continue his efforts as an example of who supports Mr. Hall, Mr. Kiester and anyone else who runs on that "ticket". We totally would expect those candidates to support Mr. Sanchezs' efforts and would encourage them to do so. Someday, you just might "get it".

They will never get it Ed. Did you see jwp's latest? Can't believe the Eagle actually prints this garbage.

THIS COMMENTARY IS REALLY LAUGHABLE

JohninMarco writes:

I agree Sailor. Old, tried men who live in the past. They ALL are afraid of anything that THEY can not control. All they do is slowly destroy the city with all the negativity.

ejburger writes:

JohninMarco, they don't destroy Marco they just continue to destroy what's left of their credibility. The ironic thing is that the guys who complain the most aren't really Marco residents, they are unhappy seasonal owners who just want to stir the pot. I agree Sailor, Uhler's letter to Putnam above is ridiculous.

and now ALL the idiot issler supporters come out of the woodwork...ya'll pat each other on the back now...ya hear?...slopsided/onesided/blind idiots.
how was you dinner with arceri and wal-duck?

EdFoster writes:

Issler,

You continue to be an a-s. Neither Dr. Sanchez nor I personally get to "define" asbestos any more than we personally "define" water. It is what it is and your not liking it doesn't change matters in the least. If you will look at the picture accompanying Kelly' article, you will see an example of "friable" asbestos. It was lying on the west side of Collier Boulevard near one of the condos. I took the picture. It was there ... along with tons more. And there was even more on the Glon Property ... and not just on Site C. It was thrown into containers and dragged off the island, uncovered. These are violations of the Clean Air Act. Why don't you do some of that "investigation" you're famous for and give us an unbiased report? Or don't you know the meaning of the word "unbiased"?

Hows NC Ed?

EdFoster writes:

Hey OldMarcoMan, North Carolina is great! Cleaner air than on Marco, cleaner water than on Marco (you can even drink the stuff out of the tap) and much cleaner politics. Miss my friends, miss the beautiful sunsets, miss watching the dolphins and manatees in my "polluted" canal, miss the pelicans and sandpipers but I don't miss the misinformation, disinformation and downright lies that pervade the place.

Why don't you come up and visit sometime?
