I have two boys at Charter Middle school. Reese is in seventh grade, and Miles is in sixth grade. As a parent, I think it would be great to have more parents on the board, because they are the most interested in what the issues are. I can’t see any reason why it would be anything but positive if the school board were completely controlled by parents, to better serve the kids. The ratio in Collier County of people who have children to voters who don’t have children is may be a factor here. My children both attended private schools before they went to Charter and Tommy Barfield. Their performance on the FCATs was not what it should have been. Now that they are in Collier County schools, they tested at grade level or better. So, I am very pleased with Collier County schools, even more than private schools.
Yes, there should definitely be more parents on the school board. They are the ones that are most effective, more effective than local business leaders or politicians or people that have been involved in education. These people are useful and good, but they generally have a history of having been involved in education, as opposed to being directly involved in it, right now, with their children, which are their most important assets.
Having children, although they are now grown, I feel they should be represented. Parents should be on the board, and they should have some voice, some say in what goes on, because they are a broad segment of the population and student body. So, this is easy for me to answer. My children did not grow up here, but I think all parents need to be active in their childrens’ education, all through elementary school and high school. It’s important for parents to be involved. The PTA should make sure that parents are represented. Parents need somebody to lobby for their representation, and it’s better if they work as a collective group rather than as individuals. The PTA is the way to do that.
