Long-range road planners in Collier and Lee counties show they can keep their eye on what’s important — even if that isn’t the flashiest or most popular project on the books.
When they met for a joint meeting the other day, road planners affirmed the need to extend Collier Boulevard — known as County Road 951 in Lee and State
Road 951 from U.S. 41 to Marco Island — from Immokalee Road to Alico Road.
They made that determination even though maneuvering Collier Boulevard through environmentally sensitive lands in southern Lee will be tricky, and the inventory of north-south lanes in that area is expanding.
Collier/Lee officials seem to understand that within the next 25 years, north Collier/south Lee still will need help with traffic — and this would ease pressure to revive talk of tolling fully funded lanes of Interstate 75.
Planners could have decided the year 2035 is a long way off and who cares if motorists then are grinding their teeth?
But not this time. Advance planning is kicking into gear. It is heartening to see it in action.
