A San Carlos Park man returned home from work Monday and found someone had stolen several weapons, including two AK-47 assault rifles, but left behind thousands of rounds of ammunition.
According to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office report:
Johnnie Jim Craft, 59, of the 18000 block of Oriole Road, told deputies he noticed the rear glass and wood doors of his house pushed open. He immediately called law enforcement. Deputies found a claw hammer that could have been used to break open the doors.
Once inside, someone entered a room and pried open two gun safes. Deputies believe the claw hammer was used on the safes also. The culprit took a Glock handgun, a Bushmaster AR-15 rifle, the AK-47s, a Ruger MK-3, A Ruger ME, a Ruger .22-caliber handgun, a Smith and Wesson .22-caliber revolver, a Ruger 9mm and a Kel Tec .223-caliber rifle.
Deputies wrote an inventory of the missing guns was pending. More could have been stolen.
Someone also stole several silver dollar coins, a gold and diamond ring, a Canon camera and $2 bills from the safes.
The total value of the missing items exceeds $7,000, authorities said.
The thief did not take or attempt to take other property from the house including flat-screen televisions, computers, several hundred dollars worth of high-end flashlights nor 20,000 rounds of ammunition and thousands of dollars worth of firearm accessories.
Deputies have a suspect, but no arrests had been made as of Tuesday afternoon.
