Letter to the Editor: The gauntlet has been thrown

John Putnam recently wrote a letter to the editor posing approximately 21 varying “Tell Me Why” political questions to our City Council. I have found all but one of his questions to be very thought-provoking.

Each of his concerns deserves to be courteously and promptly addressed by our City Council. Readers of this paper will recall that I very recently asked several financial questions of the council. They responded to each question in a timely and succinct manner, much to the appreciation of many fellow Marco Islanders and myself. We applaud them.

Although Mr. Putnam’s “Tell Me Why” questions are more numerous and cover a much broader spectrum of Marco events than did mine, it’s reasonable to think our community expects they will be granted the same caliber of attention that I enjoyed. I note that many of Mr. Putnam’s questions are extremely challenging; nonetheless, the talent this administration enjoys with its six intelligent councilors and its one professional city manager assures the public and Mr. Putnam of receiving comprehensive, honest and accurate responses, does it not?

The gauntlet appears to have been thrown, gentlemen, and I, for one, welcome an increasingly aware, questioning and involved citizenry.

Mr. Columbo, Mr. Hall, MITA, etc: It may come as a big surprise to all of you but I am certain that the Coucil members have much more to do with their time than to address your "questions". After all, it has become increasingly obvious (the voting booths) that your questions, or the answers, are not of interest to the majority of us.
The Council is responsible for governing, not 20 questions. We are fortunate to have Council members that devote the time that they do to Council without even considering your questions. After all, the answers would not satisfy you anyway, and you know that in advance. So why even pursue them.
Mr. Columbo, this "Gauntlet" exists in your mind and that of a few. I encourage you to run for Council so that the point can be driven home.

Why answer Putnam?? Nothing anyone can say would be acceptable in his mind. Russ, you disappoint me with this one, Putnam is not worthy of your time or the councils time.
