Bag of sand sets off bomb scare at UF

GAINESVILLE — Authorities say a suspicious backpack caused the closing of a University of Florida parking garage for several hours until officials determined the bag was full of sand.

UF police received a call Monday morning about a backpack with a duct-taped bag inside of it sitting on a student union loading dock. The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad used a robot to investigate.

Gainesville Fire Rescue’s hazardous materials unit tested the white substance in the bag and found it to be beach sand.

It’s not clear who owned the backpack or why it held about 25 pounds of sand.
