I know of a spooky house, a real one: that house that’s been sinking into the water on Cape Ramano, ever since I can remember, and we’ve been here for 17 years. My kids call it the Octopus House, because it looks like an octopus. It just hovers; it never actually falls. But, when you get close to it, it gives you the feeling that it’s about to fall over, right on top of you.
That would have to be my seventh-grade classroom. A bunch of twelve-year-olds ready for Halloween is the best I can do; that makes school a little bit spooky this week. I teach at Charter Middle School, and my students and I have been looking forward to Halloween.
There’s a couple of spooky places on Marco, that I’ve found. One of them is the main cemetery on the Island. You gotta go on a new moon, or a full moon. And, you have to listen to the wind in the trees…and listen for the other voices, too.
The other place is one very few people know about. It’s in the Estates area. On Inlet Drive, there’s a cemetery…very few people know. The Historical Society has a marker there. If you sit up there on a full moon night, you can hear the wind…and you can hear…the other voices. And, you may see…shadows – and there’s lots of them up there.
