Editorial: Collier County Commission ... board heard stakeholders, then made right decisions

Collier County commissioners made some tough calls the other day. We believe those decisions, made in the face of advice to the contrary by staff and volunteer advisers, are the right way to go.

Although staff members all the way up to the county manager assured the public that a recycling depot next to Calusa Park Elementary School in East Naples would be harmless, parents and neighbors were not convinced — and showed up to say so. Parents and neighbors, who feared toxins and other pollution, are the ones who will have to live with it, and commissioners were listening.

Commissioners also were listening to the supporters of the county museum system about the history-minded facilities having nowhere else to turn except tourist taxes to keep going.

Rather than go with advisers who recommended weaning the museums off the tourist tax over the next few years, commissioners dipped into tourist-tax savings. The board did what it had to do until economic conditions offer more options.
