Southwest Florida Yard & Garden Show

More than 30 vendors will offer native and tropical plants and trees, orchids, irrigation systems, pottery, fountains, and more for those looking to begin or renew their gardens. Garden-related educational programs, exhibits and demonstrations will also be offered at this two-day event,

* Where: UF/Collier County Extension Office, 14700 Immokalee Road, Naples

* When: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday

* Cost: Adults, $3; children younger than 12, free


Sushi preparation

Marcia Norberg, who has lived in Korea and Taiwan and traveled extensively in Japan, will demonstrate and give practical tips for sushi preparation at the Ikebana International Naples meeting. Ikebana International is a worldwide organization that practices the art of Japanese flower arranging, but also celebrates and enjoys other Japanese cultural activities. The meeting will start with a social period. The public is welcome to attend, but an advance reservation is requested.

The Naples Orchid Society Meeting

David Genovese, a member of NOS who is studying to become an American Orchid Society certified judge, will speak e Naples Orchid Society meeting on AOS orchid judging and how to prepare for it. This program is intended to prepare the audience for exhibiting their orchids at meetings and the 2010 show in March.

Nov. 7

Southwest Florida Butterfly Conference

Learn interesting new facts about butterflies and take a tour of Tom and Sandy Allen’s garden in Fort Myers to see specimens of local butterflies. The ninth annual butterfly conference will be held in Fort Myers with speeches by butterfly experts Marc Minno, Ellen Brown and Robert Wilk. For an extra $5, attendees can receive a packed lunch from Jason’s Deli.

Nov. 7

The Art of Bonsai

The Bonsai Society of Southwest Florida holds its annual show, The Art of Bonsai, at the Bell Tower Mall in Fort Myers. Features will include an exhibit of bonsai trees and demonstrations of bonsai styling by bonsai artists Erik Wigert and Ernie Fernandez at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.. There will also be a bazaar area where bonsai trees, pots, and equipment will be sold.

‘The Brazilian Garden and New Works’

Raymond Jungles, award-winning landscape architect and designer — whose work includes the Naples Botanical Garden’s expansion opening that week — is the guest for a book sale and signing of his latest book, “The Colors of Nature: Subtropical Gardens.” Jungles is the recipient of numerous awards and has been recognized in publications such as “Luxury Gardens of the World (2008),” and “Collection of International Landscape Designers (2008).” In “The Colors of Nature,” Jungles showcases more than 20 of his residential projects spanning over the last 20 years, which includes the Lynne and Chip Shotwell Garden in Naples. His visit is sponsored by the Naples Garden Club.
