Grab a hat, gloves, knee pad, sunscreen and your cell phone

What do you think you can do with these items?

Gardening. It’s that time again. The fall season gives us the opportunity to enjoy the weather and freshen up the landscape and garden. New flowering plants, such as petunias, geranium and mums are coming into the garden centers and it is about time to sparkle the outdoors with new color.

Gardening tools are important; shovels, rakes, pots, hoses, to name a few.

Besides these, personal items are just as critical: Wear sunglasses — help protect your eyes. Keep up on the sunscreen. Your skin will deal much better in the long run. A hat will shade you and keep you a bit cooler. Gloves keep dirt away from any cuts or scrapes. An open wound, no matter how small, is an invitation for an infection. Keep those hands gloved. As far as the clothing, long sleeves and pants are good choices. The more you can keep the skin covered, the better you will fare in the great outdoors in your own yard. A knee pad will be a total luxury to you if you have never tried one. You really don’t have to go and buy a garden knee pad if you have something similar around the house already. You never know, just be creative.

Take your time while gardening. Take breaks and drink plenty of water. Water is good for the body.

If you are using a ladder for any reason, be sure it is in good shape and well positioned before you climb up the steps. When any electric tool is needed, check out the cord first. Any defects, such as loose cord or tear in wiring, should shout the word “stop.” This included extension cords too.

Insects live outdoors. After all, it’s their home. Keep an eye out for them. Any bites should be treated right away, including fire ant bites. Hopefully, you will not run into any poisonous bugs, but we do have some of these around — and snakes too.

When working outdoors, always carry a cell phone. You never know if or when you may need it. You could never guess the reasons you may need it. Just keep it handy, always.

Gardening outdoors during our cooler season here in Florida is such a joy. It is also very relaxing and can help clear the mind from everyday stress.

Have fun outdoors in the garden and yard. Don’t forget to add in some decorative extras to show your personal touch to the area.
