The young Lely Lady Trojans showed their potential in a loss to Palmetto Ridge on Tuesday night.
We lost in four games, winning the third game, 25-23, while losing 25-13, 25-23 and 25-23.
Once the girls got warmed up, and past the nerves of their first real varsity match, they looked strong. We held the lead throughout a majority of the night, including late in game two. After a strong start to game three, taking a 12-4 lead, we pushed to the end and squeaked by with some scrappy, confident play.
It was an exciting match and a disappointing loss, but we know that this could have gone either way.
Junior middle blocker Booey Blassneck had five blocks; freshman middle hitter Mary Gibler led the team with eighth kills on 14 attempts and three blocks. Sophomore setter Lisa Feola had 24 assists, two blocks, two aces, and two kills.
We left the court with knowing we will make no excuses, just a commitment to ourselves that we will continue to improve so that when we see Palmetto Ridge in our season finale, the result will be different.
The Lady Trojans next match is at home, against Immokalee, at 7 p.m., Tuesday.
